Holiday Lights at the Bronx Zoo

So, as you know, Drew and I have a membership with the Bronx Zoo.   On Thursday we headed to the zoo for the annual Holiday Lights show.

The winter hours for the zoo — park opens at 10 AM, animal exhibits close at 4 PM, park closes at 4:30. The Holiday Lights events begin at 4:30, but if you have a ticket for the special event you can enter the park at 3 PM.

We arrived at 3, so we had about an hour to visit with the animals.

I love the waterfall at the Bronx River entrance to the zoo.

It was a bit chilly …

A bear!

Oh deer …

We headed over to World of Darkness, an indoor exhibit.  We hadn’t been able to see this exhibit when we came last May, so we were anxious to visit.

Definitely interesting.

They had three different types of bats.

There were caymans.

And some interesting rodents.

This little guy was persistent.

And afterwards we ran into a peacock.  I love peacocks.

With no more animals to look at, we decided to grab a bite to eat at the Dancing Crane Cafe while we waited for darkness and the light show. Drew had hot dogs, I got a grain bowl.

We picked up our souvenir refillable mugs.

And then it was time for the light show.

The park is set up as a series of “lantern trails”, representing various animal environments — Africa, Asia, the ocean, North America, a forest… Additionally there are holiday decorations on the zoo buildings, activities for the children such as puppet shows and train rides, a s’mores station, stilt walkers…lots of fun stuff.  You can hear holiday music on the park’s public address system.

Some favorites

There is a Christmas tree display at the zoo center.

Did you notice that the lights form animal patterns?

Photo op!

Yes, I am a child …

Eventually the evening came to an end, and we went back to the car to, um, defrost…

  1. Wow! Wow! to a lot of your photos, but the most "Wow!y" was the naked mole rats! I have never seen a zoo have them! Bats neither. We used to have a bat rehabilitator come with bats to small school groups. She kept a little one warm in her bra! Lovely photos of you and Drew.
