Saturday 9

Hold Me Now

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9
questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to
answer the questions, however, and here is today's questions!

Saturday 9: Hold Me Now (1983)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) This week's song begins with a young man gazing at a picture of himself and his girlfriend in happier times. Are there any photographs in the room you're in right now?

There’s a photo of my parents (of blessed memory) and my daughters, taken at my cousin’s wedding. It was the last big party my father ever attended, the last time he danced with my mother.  They loved to dance.

2) His girl tells him he's a dreamer. Do you consider yourself more a dreamer or realist?

Realist.

3) "Hold Me Now" was a big hit for the British pop band, The Thompson Twins. They got their start in the late 1970s in the English city of Sheffield, so named because the River Sheaf runs through it. Do you know how your town got its name?

I grew up in a town called Dix Hills.  There is an historical marker in front of the firehouse that explains the name of the town … it was named for Dick Pechegan,  a Native American who lived in the region in the late 1690’s.

Now I live in Hicksville, named after Valentine Hicks, who bought the land in 1834 and created a railroad depot in 1837, and eventually became president of the Long Island Railroad.   Hicksville is still a major station on the railroad.

4) Today lead singer Tom Bailey performs solo and is an outspoken advocate for veganism. Vegans abstain from consuming animal products, particularly in their diets. Are you a vegan, or have you ever tried to stick to a vegan diet?

No, I am not vegan or vegetarian.  I do have a restricted diet, however.  I have Celiac disease and cannot eat gluten.

5) Tom's former bandmate Joe Leeway has left show business altogether and concentrates on a career in hypnotherapy. This therapy is commonly used to treat insomnia, smoking cessation and obesity. Is hypnotherapy something you have tried, or would consider?

I’ve never given it serious thought.  A few entertainers tried to hypnotize me, without success.

6) In 1983, when this song was popular, Motorola introduced the first cell phone. Today cell phones are an essential part of our every day lives. Do you still have a landline?

Drew is old school, he loves his landline.  Which was useful when AT & T had that cell phone outage a few weeks ago.

7) Also in 1983, American West airlines took off, flying between Las Vegas and Phoenix. Where did you travel to on your most recent flight?

We flew home to NYC from Tampa at the end of a wonderful vacation in December 2022. We took a Caribbean cruise and visited friends who live in Florida.

8) In 1983, Princess Diana was the world's top cover girl. Are there any magazines in the room you're in? If yes, who or what is on the cover?

I do all my reading on my Kindle these days, so no magazines in the room.

9) Random question: Is anyone on your bad side this morning?

Yes, I admit to being annoyed at someone … when you promise to do something on Saturday, and it’s still not done the following Thursday …

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

  1. It's lovely that you have a photo of your parents at that moment.

  2. #1 My parents asked me to take an anniversary photo of them and the best one was one when I just snapped it, you could see the love in their eyes. It is the one I have of them on my mantle.
#3 Back in the 70s I installed all the ambulances and hospital with mobile EKG radios, I spent a couple of months there.
#6 The sound quality is so much better then a cell phone.

  3. Pictures are the best. They help the memories live on. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend. ♥

  4. I have a lot of family photos on my walls--something I've done over the years.

  5. I had to look around for photos! I have dozens of paintings, but the only photo in sight is a thrifted antique gelatin silver wedding photo of strangers!
Landline? I don't even have a phone wire to the house since it was torn out of the eaves by a garbage truck when they road was being redone (the elevation was high, and the contractors told the garbage company to watch it, but they didn't).

  6. My zip code is actually in Troutville, which was named for some people named Trout. It's just a part of the county, not an actual incorporated place, though.

  7. Telling people the first cell phone came out in 1983 is misleading. Teenagers do not understand that that doesn't mean people actually had them then. (It's funny to try to explain this to them. Total disconnect.)
