Saving All My Love for You

Welcome to Saturday 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9 questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love memes, however, and here is today's meme!

Saturday 9: Saving All My Love for You (1985)

Unfamiliar with this week's song? Hear it here

1) This was Whitney Houston's first big hit, her introduction to a mass, national audience. But music was not her first career. While she was still in high school, Whitney was a model and  Seventeen magazine covergirl. Is there a print magazine in your home right now? If yes, who is on the cover?

I do most of my reading on my iPad or Kindle, but I have the print edition of Prevention.  No one is on the cover.

2) During her modeling days, she also appeared on packaging for Simplicity patterns. Can you sew?

No.  My 8th grade home economics teacher had to finish my sewing project for me.  I can sew a button or repair a small tear, but beyond that … not a chance.

3) "Saving All My Love for You" was the record that made Whitney Houston a superstar in the UK. Let's flip that: Tell us about a British performer you enjoy listening to.

4) This song was composed by Michael Masser. He left his career as a stockbroker to pursue his passion for music and scored his first major hit with "Touch Me in the Morning" by Diana Ross. Do you feel you have a greater affinity for the analytical/logical or the creative/emotional?

Analytical/logical.

5) The lyrics were written by Gerald Goffin. He, too, took a circuitous route to music success. After high school he joined the Navy. When that stint was over, he went to college and studied chemistry. He worked in a lab for a while, but that was just to earn a regular paycheck until he could support himself with songwriting. What was your first job after you finished your education? How long did you stay at that job?

The real reason Gerry Goffin took a job in a lab was because his songwriting partner/wife Carole King was pregnant. But eventually they wound up at the Brill Building and wrote many hit songs. Like this one

As you might expect, my first “real” job was with a law firm. When I was hired I was one of five attorneys at the firm.  When I left seven years later, I was one of 20 attorneys.  I left because they didn’t treat me well when I was on maternity leave. It was 1990, before FMLA was law and where pregnancy discrimination was fairly common, especially in a male-dominated field.

6) While this week's song was Whitney's first hit, it wasn't her most biggest hit. That was "I Will Always Love You," from the soundtrack of her movie The Bodyguard"I Will Always Love You" was written and originally recorded by Dolly Parton. The film's star and producer Kevin Costner called Dolly personally to get her permission to use her song, a courtesy she appreciated. Who has recently been thoughtful or kind to you?

I was diagnosed with celiac disease about a year and a half ago.  There are many foods I can no longer eat.  Imagine my delight, then, when my boyfriend came back from the supermarket with a box of frozen gluten free knishes.

7) Whitney was a big fan of tomato soup. So is Barbra Streisand. (Maybe is bestows some kind of musical superpower!) What's your favorite soup for an autumn day like today?

My sister makes a very simple pumpkin tomato bisque.  It’s wonderful.  I’m going to have to make her recipe,

8) 1985 wasn't just big for Whitney. It was also the year Bruce Willis became a household name when his TV series premiered on ABC. Can you name it?

Moonlighting, of course. I think I saw every episode.

9) Random question:
While dining out, have you ever sent food back?

No.  I’ve had issues that required a manager to correct, but never to the point of sending the food back.

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

  1. You can't sew at all (besides buttons and such)? I mean, it's not like anyone really needs to, truly.

    1. It’s just not in my skill set.

My mother hated sewing. When I was a child she bought a sewing machine but never used it. Her sister, however, loved to sew, knit, do needlepoint, etc. my aunt actually sewed the curtains than hung in my childhood bedroom for years.

  2. #2 Ditto
#3 One time I was lip singing Bohemian Rhapsody at a traffic light when a police car pulled up next to me and he was staring at me so I lowered the window. He started laughing and then the light turn green.
#9 “issues that required a manager to correct” one time in Provincetown once in December when the town is deserted, I was with four other friends including the mayor we were the only other people in the restaurant and the waiter ignored us. The mayor got up and walked into the bar and talked to the owner and the owner apologized and waited on us and said that the waiter was looking for a new job.

    1. I guess a lot of us have food restrictions now. I miss regular pasta, the gluten free version isn’t nearly as good.

  5. I used to sew with the easier Simplicity patterns. When I had my daughter I got a new machine to sew cute dresses for her. Only lasted a short while, I can't put in a zipper to save the clothing! My mother sewed a lot of my clothing, until I got to be a teen, then nope, not having it!

  6. That is nice that your boyfriend found something you can eat. I forgot Queen! Carole King is one of my favorite singers! I still have my original Tapestry album and I have it on my IP too. I saw her in Los Angles at the Dolby theater in 2012. It was an all star tribute concert to her music. I also saw the Beautiful play.

  7. I think that was very sweet of your fella.
