Wind
We were under a wind advisory (again) Thursday night. The wind was HOWLING!
We’ve had a lot of windy days this year. More than usual, I think.
One of my neighbors has wind chimes. I hear them on windy nights … even with my windows closed. I wonder how loud they’ll be in the summer, when I keep my windows open.
I went to college at the State University of New York at Albany. The campus was designed by Edward Durrell Stone, who famously designed the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Stone’s plan grouped all of the university’s academic buildings onto a single podium. The academic podium contained many interesting features, including beautiful arches, as seen here. Those arches channeled the wind … in winter people almost always used the underground tunnels between buildings because the wind was so fierce … Urban legend had it that Stone designed the campus for a school in the Carolinas, where the arches were meant to circulate air in a hot, muggy climate. Stone died during my freshman year, and the student newspaper joked that he’d gone to Hell “because he always designed for a warmer climate.”
Every time it gets windy, neighbors on the Ring app complain about how people shouldn’t put their recycling out on the curb for pickup because it gets blown all over the street.
I’ve had to chase after my newspapers — we’re old school and get actual papers delivered. The papers are dropped off at the foot of the driveway …but on very windy days the papers might migrate to the street …
I’m still a little salty about the garbage can. When I was still living in Wantagh I had a garbage can on wheels. One day after my trash was collected tge wind blew the garbage can down the street, and since it didn’t have my house number or any identifying information, I assume a neighbor kept it. I put my house number on the replacement, of course. When I moved I gave the replacement can to my friend who lived in the other apartment at that address.
Winnie the Pooh sang about the wind.
And Christina Rossetti wrote a poem.
Who Has Seen the Wind?
Who has seen the wind?
Neither I nor you:
But when the leaves hang trembling,
The wind is passing through,
Who has seen the wind!
Neither you nor I:
But when the trees bow down their headstone
The wind is passing by.
March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. March winds bring April showers; April showers bring May flowers.
I think I’m ready for May flowers …
I think I’d settle for April showers.
Gusty winds make me nervous. I understand what a mess you've been dealing with.
ReplyDeleteThose windy days can be scary.
ReplyDeleteGusy winds have always been part of March but now this is getting scary, no matter where you live. I don't think, as the crow flies, the Brooklyn fire yesterday was that far from where one of my relatives lives. And Suffolk County's fire was on national evening news yesterday. At least my newspaper delivery person puts the paper in a plastic bag. Maybe not ecological but the newspaper doesn't blow into parts unknown.
ReplyDeleteThe papers are so small these days that they fly away even when placed in a plastic bag.
DeleteThe East End brush fires were scary. My fire department was asked to contribute personnel and equipment and were about 40-50 miles away from where the fires were.
