Saturday 9

Hotel California

Welcome to Saturday: 9. What we've committed to our readers is that we will post 9
questions every Saturday. Sometimes the post will have a theme, and at other times the questions will be totally unrelated. Those weeks we do "random questions," so-to-speak. We encourage you to visit other participants posts and leave a comment. Because we don't have any rules, it is your choice. We hate rules. We love to answer the questions, however, and here are today's questions!

Saturday 9: Hotel California (1977)

Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.

1) In this song, Don Henley called the hotel's front desk and asked, "Please bring me my wine." He was told they haven't had wine since 1969. When did you last have a glass of wine?

New Year’s Eve

2) The lyrics refer to wine as a "spirit." That is incorrect. Wines are fermented, not distilled, and have a lower alcohol content than spirits. When "Hotel California" was popular, listeners who were into wine called radio stations to let them know about the mistake. Are you a wine aficionado? Are any of your friends or family knowledgeable about wine?

My parents were into wine.  My mother especially loved Prosecco. The first time she drank it was in Venice, before it was popular here in America.

3) In the song, Henley sings about looking for the door that will take him "back to the place I was before." Don says that refers to a loss of innocence and a longing for a simpler time. When you think about "the good old days," where does your mind wander to?

Different times…like when I was in college, or when my children were little.

Back in November I was thinking about summer camp.  I read an article in the local newspaper and discovered the day camp where I spent my summers had closed for good.  I loved my summers at camp.

4) With five #1 singles, six #1 albums, and six Grammy awards, it's generally agreed that the Eagles were one of the most popular groups of the 1970s. Which decade produced most of your favorite songs?

Why, the 70’s, of course.

5) The Eagles were formed in 1971 when four of them happened to find themselves hired to play back up for Linda Ronstadt. The men found they really hit off and wanted to keep working together when the gig with Linda was up. Tell us about how you met someone important in your life.

Did I ever tell you how I met Drew?  I had a summer job at the beach and my coworker asked me if I’d like to meet her brother. After a few phone calls, he showed up at my front door.

6) The Eagles are still on the road, filling big arenas for their Long Goodbye tour. One explanation for their enduring popularity is that their music spans genres. They scored hits on the rock, pop and country charts. Other popular categories of music include classical, gospel, jazz, Latin, reggae, New Age, and rap. Which do you listen to most often? Which did you listen to most recently?

I like variety.  Classic rock.  Folk.  Pop standards.  Broadway.  I’m open to listening to most genres.

Most recently?  My car radio is tuned to an oldies station, WCBS-FM.  It’s mostly top 40 from the 80’s and 90’s, with some older stuff occasionally in the mix.  I started listening to this station when “oldies” meant the 60’s and 70’s.

7) In 1976, when "Hotel California" was topping the charts, the trend in home decor was vibrant. Intense copper, bright pink and vivid avocado were among the popular colors for bath towels, mats and shower curtains that year. If we were to peek into your 2024 bathroom(s), what colors would we find?

Downstairs…white walls, tiles, etc. , with beige and blue accessories.

Upstairs…white tiles, etc. and the accessories are dark purple and gray.

8) Handbags were big in 1976. Not just in popularity but in size. Purses routinely had compartments on the inside and pockets on the outside. When you leave the house, do you travel light? Or do you prefer to carry a lot with you?

I never leave the house without my pocketbook — it holds my wallet, keys, phone, Kleenex, Chapstick, hairbrush, Advil …

When I go to the office, I have my pocketbook, my laptop bag and my lunch tote.

9) Random question -- How different is your life today than it was a year ago: (a) a lot; (b) a little); (c) not at all?

A year ago I was living in a one bedroom apartment and I had just gotten a cat;  now Shadow and I live in a house with Drew and Duchess. A year ago I worked from home 5 days a week and felt very isolated; now I go to the office twice a week and feel connected.

But other than that everything remains the same.  Same family relationships, same friends…

Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!

  1. "Connected." That's a perfect word for how I feel now that covid is in the rearview mirror. I learned a great deal about myself during lockdown, and that I do, indeed, need to get out regularly is one of them.

    1. Exactly. I was feeling very isolated during the pandemic.

  2. It is so important to feel connected. I enjoy that about my job too. We pretty much went right back to school after covid in August of 2020. It was actually nice to be with people again and talk about things with others. It was not until two years later that I actually got covid for the first time. Loved your answers! Have a nice weekend! ♥

  3. Finally, a song I know! On my phone too. The Eagles were big in the '70s, but I preferred, by far, Jackson Browne. The Eagles have too much "twang." That's obvious in comparing the two versions of Take it Easy, theirs and Browne's.

  4. I watched the same special with Eydie and Steve. There is an article about her athttps://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/aug/11/eydie-gorme
Technology helped me stay connected to my crafting group and friends.

  5. A few years ago I, too, got to thinking about my old summer camp (Sylvania of the Rockies in Bailey, CO). Thanks to Google and social media, I discovered it's no more -- yet a Facebook group was created to share recollections.

  6. Yikes, I feel old thinking that I remember "oldies" meaning songs from the 50's. I'm just sort of insulted now when they include 80's music. LOL

  7. I have plenty of purses, or some calls handbags.

  8. I do not like "Hotel California". It creeps me out. I don't hate The Eagles, though.
