Music Monday
Barry Manilow has been ill lately. He had to cancel and reschedule all of his concert appearances.Another artist showing his age.
I am a fanilow.Yes, I like Barry Manilow, and yes, I've actually seen Barry Manilow perform live, once at Radio City, and then at his one-man show on Broadway.
So today I am presenting some of my favorite Manilow songs.
His first big hit, "Mandy", was actually a cover of a Scott English tune; English called the song "Brandy", but Manilow changed the name to avoid confusion with a song by The Looking Glass.
And then there was "Could It Be Magic". He'll often sing this one and "Mandy" as a medley.
He paints quite a romantic picture:
Then there was his "Very Strange Medley", songs he wrote or performed that you probably didn't know were his:
Who writes the songs?
Her name was Lola
An all star playlist. I would hate to have to pick a favorite song of his but I think Cocacabana and I Write the Songs would be my favorites. But the most fun was the VSM. I had forgotten about Manilow's early 1970's advertising work before he made it big (and no shame in that; Dr. Seuss did advertising, tooI). So I see Manilow was seen in public in late April but has a ways to go before his lungs recover enough to resume performing. 82 is a hard age to recover from anything.
ReplyDeleteHe has rescheduled concerts multiple times
DeleteMost of these are familiar. Sad that so many of our favourite artists are ageing and/or ailing. Wishing Barry Manilow a speedy recovery!
ReplyDeleteEvery musician would like the write a song that the whole world plays. Barry got that done time and time again. Have a blessed week.
ReplyDeleteBarry Manilow has many wonderful songs that I've enjoyed over the years. You picked some of my favorites, but I can't say which would be at the top of my list, though. Fabulous Manilow mini concert from the comfort of my home. Have a boogietastic week, Robin!
ReplyDeleteI have a sad feeling that Barry Manilow won't live much longer. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think he can sing any more. It must be so very difficult to lose your voice, your instrument..luke Julie Andrews and Linda Ronstadt. I l9ve his music, it always feels uplifting maybe because of the crescendo he has in many of his songs. I had to laugh at the jingles he created. I had no idea he did those too. He has no issue making fun of himself.
