Cool Night
Saturday 9: Cool Night (1981)
Unfamiliar with this week's song? Hear it here.
1) In this song, Paul Davis invites his old girlfriend to "come on over tonight." Have you more recently extended or received an invitation?
Extended an invitation. Rosh Hashanah will be celebrated on Wednesday night and Thursday night. I will be hosting dinner both nights: my family on Wednesday and a group of our friends Thursday. My sisters will be doing most of the cooking Wednesday night — they have successfully duplicated my father’s famous chicken soup. I’m still working on my menu for Thursday night.
2) He tells her she doesn't have to commit to any plans. Do you like having a schedule ahead of you with things to do delineated? Or do you prefer to see how your days naturally unfold?
A bit of both.
3) He wants them to cuddle by the fire. Will tonight be a cool night where you are?
The forecast calls for temperatures in the low 60’s. Chilly but not horribly cold.
4) A quiet night in front of the fireplace is likely how Paul Davis spent many evenings. When he died in 2008, his best friend remembered him as a quiet man, "a homebody" who liked staying up late into the night enjoying conversation and music with friends. Describe your perfect evening.
That’s difficult, there are a lot of things I’d choose to do in the evening. Lately I’ve really enjoyed our Friday nights. We order take-out and watch tv, just the two of us and the cats.
5) Mr. Davis also enjoyed playing pool and golf. Do you have a liking for either of those games?
I’ve played miniature golf, does that count?
I don’t think I’ve picked up a pool cue since the 80’s.
6) When he retired from music, Paul Davis returned to Meridian, MS,the town where he was born and grew up. Since we Americans can be a nomadic lot, let's find out: Is the town where you were born the same place where you spent most of your growing up years?
No, but it’s close. I grew up on Long Island. We lived in Nassau County when I was born, and moved to Suffolk County when I was 8 years old, a distance of 22 miles. I currently live in Nassau County, about 4 miles from the house I lived in when I was very young.
7) In 1981, when Paul Davis was a hit, so were The Rolling Stones with "Start Me Up." What's your favorite Rolling Stones' song?
8) Also in 1981, Snoopy was all the rage, with kids and adults alike. You could buy Snoopy magnets, pencils, pencil sharpeners, note pads ... even a Snoopy bulletin board. If today we went shopping for office supplies, what would you pick up?
Legal pad, pens, printer ink and paper, staples and post-its.
9) Random question: In a biopic of your life, who would play your mom and dad?
I’m not sure how to answer that … do I want actors who look like my parents? Let me think about that….
Thanks so much for joining us again at Saturday: 9. As always, feel free to come back, see who has participated and comment on their posts. In fact sometimes, if you want to read & comment on everyone's responses, you might want to check back again tomorrow. But it is not a rule. We haven’t any rules here. Join us on next Saturday for another version of Saturday: 9, "Just A Silly Meme on a Saturday!" Enjoy your weekend!
I totally had a stuffed Snoopy in 1981. And all sorts of Snoopy stuff. I didn't realize I was all the rage.
ReplyDeleteI bet your chicken soup is great! I am going to a market in Orange country on Sunday that sells Jewish food. I am not sure if I stated that correctly. I will be getting a round challah loaf and I will see what else. I am getting fresh honey and apples at the farmer's market. I got several small pomegranates. I have enjoyed reading more out of the Bible and the holy days. Have a nice weekend.
ReplyDeleteL’Shanah Tovah, it’s a wish for a sweet New Year.
DeleteI love that your family has a recipe to pass from generation to generation. Tooling around on eBay, I found a copy of my family church's cookbook from the 1970s. That's how my aunt finally got my late grandma's "no cook fudge" recipe. That made Auntie so happy.
ReplyDeleteWow
DeleteYou didn't stray far from home either, I see.
ReplyDeleteI struggled to pick people to play my parents. They don't have the right energy.
